Voices Of Kooyong FAQ

WHAT IS VOICES OF KOOYONG?

Voices of Kooyong is a grassroots community engagement group made up of local citizens who want to give the people of Kooyong a greater voice in the political process.

We encourage members of our community to become involved with the democratic process, to engage with other locals and to speak about the issues which are important to them.  Voices of Kooyong is working to engage all the voices of Kooyong.

We aim to foster electoral representation that truly represents our community, where integrity and honesty matter. We are seeking improved community engagement and representation for Kooyong residents. Voices of Kooyong will continue that work throughout the federal election campaign and beyond.

Voices of Kooyong provides a place where all members of our community can engage with each other, develop our community networks and have an open forum in which to discuss issues of importance to our community.

IS VOICES OF KOOYONG A POLITICAL PARTY?

No, Voices of Kooyong is not a political party nor is it aligned with any political party.

WHY HAS VOICES OF KOOYONG FORMED?

Our votes are important and cannot be taken for granted!

Frequently the decisions of members of parliament appear to follow their party line, and prioritise the interests of party donors, vested interests and their personal career aspirations rather than truly representing the interests of the electorate.

We feel it is time our elected representatives represent the views of our community. Throughout the Kitchen Table Conversation process, it is clear that our local community feels their views on climate action, integrity and accountability in politics and respect for women is being ignored.

Together our voices are powerful.

HOW WILL VOICES OF KOOYONG KNOW WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO THE COMMUNITY?

We encourage all members of our community to become involved!

Opportunities to meet with your fellow citizens and discuss issues occur via kitchen table conversations, surveys, on Democracy Walks and other events.

Our initial survey received 500 responses from Kooyong residents and we have been conducting kitchen table conversations throughout lockdown during 2021 which will be turned into a report before the 2022 election and handed to all candidates.

I USUALLY VOTE FOR A MAJOR PARTY, WHY WOULD I GET INVOLVED WITH VOICES OF KOOYONG?

Through our Kitchen Table Conversation process it has been apparent that while there are some common themes in our community’s views, there is also a divergence of opinions. Kitchen Table Conversations are not a forum for debate but rather a process for listening to what the community values, their issues and concerns.  Whether a participant usually votes for a major party or not, the process of engaging with our neighbours and exchanging ideas is rewarding and positive. It also builds great community connections throughout Kooyong. We welcome the participation of all voters living in Kooyong and respect the diversity of people and opinions in our community.  True engagement comes from reflecting all community views through VOK, whether you usually vote for a major party or not!

IS VOICES OF KOOYONG LOOKING FOR A COMMUNITY INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE TO STAND AT THE UPCOMING FEDERAL ELECTION?

Kooyong Independents is supporting the recruitment and campaign of a community independent candidate. Voices of Kooyong had a place on the selection committee and contributed to the selection process by providing input from the broader Kooyong community via our kitchen table conversations, community survey and issues raised in events like Kooyong Connects.

WHAT IS THE KOOYONG INDEPENDENTS GROUP?

While Voices of Kooyong’s focus is community engagement, Kooyong Independents’ focus is directly on the recruitment and campaign of a community Independent to contest the next election including establishing the infrastructure and resources necessary to support a community candidate’s campaign. More information about Kooyong Independents can be found on their website at www.kooyongindependents.org or by contacting them directly. Voices of Kooyong is working collaboratively with Kooyong Independents to improve representation in Kooyong.

HOW IS VOICES OF KOOYONG FUNDED?

Voices of Kooyong is a volunteer run grassroots organization. It is self-funded and any money raised via donations is used for running costs and community engagement work such as letterbox drops or events. We also only sell Voices of Kooyong merchandise at cost price.

Voices of Kooyong does not take ongoing donations nor do we take donations on our website. We are committed to only taking donations when required for a specific purpose which we have done in 2021 via two GoFundMe campaigns.

WILL VOICES OF KOOYONG CONTINUE TO OPERATE AFTER THE FEDERAL ELECTION?

Yes. No matter who is elected as Kooyong’s next federal MP, Voices of Kooyong will continue to engage with the local community and with the elected representative.

From the Kitchen Table Conversations process, one of the overriding themes to emerge has been the failure of our current representative to genuinely engage with the electorate, and to understand and represent issues of importance to the community and Voices of Kooyong is committed to resolving that failure.
